Learn To Think Like An Herbalist - Not Just Memorize Herbs
There’s a moment that happens in almost every herbalist’s journey, and honestly, nobody really talks about it.
It’s not the exciting part where you make your first tincture. It’s not the moment someone tells you your remedy actually worked. It’s quieter than that, and sometimes a little uncomfortable.
It’s the moment you realize this isn’t just a fun hobby anymore.
Maybe someone comes to you asking for help with something serious. Maybe you’ve been sharing remedies with friends and family, and suddenly people are reaching out for things beyond muscle aches and minor scrapes. They’re trusting you with their actual health.
And if you’re like most of us, that’s when a little voice shows up asking:
What if I don’t know enough?
What if I get this wrong?
What if I actually hurt someone?
If you’ve ever felt that, I want you to know something important.
That feeling isn’t inadequacy.
It’s integrity.
When the Books Stop Being Enough
I remember being in that exact place in my early days. I had collected so many herb books, made dozens of remedies, and people were giving me incredible feedback. Things were working, and that felt amazing.
But as word spread and folks started asking for help with chronic conditions and more complex health situations, something shifted inside me. I wanted to help so badly, and at the same time, I could feel the weight of responsibility settling in.
The deeper you get into herbalism, the more you realize how much there is to learn. Even after more than 25 years of working with plants, I still feel that way. And I don’t think that’s a problem.
I think it means you’re paying attention.
Here’s what I’ve learned over the years. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stuck at this stage, it’s probably not because you need to memorize more herbs.
It’s because you’re ready for something deeper.
The Internet Herbalism Overwhelm
When I was really diving into my herbal education, we didn’t have the internet herbalism chaos that exists today. And honestly, I’m grateful for that timing.
Now, you go online wanting to learn more, and suddenly you’re faced with dozens of conflicting opinions on the same herb. You’ve got AI-generated herbal advice, loud voices claiming their way is the only right way, and endless information with very little context.
Instead of feeling clearer, you end up more confused.
When you’re working with real human bodies, the stakes feel too high to just guess. And they should feel that way. That pause, that hesitation, is your integrity showing up.
The Real Shift: From Information to Understanding
Your confidence as an herbalist isn’t going to come from stacking more books or memorizing which herb does what.
Those things matter, but they’re not the foundation.
The real shift happens when you start understanding how the body actually works.
Think about it this way. Someone comes to you with digestive issues. You know peppermint is good for digestion, so that’s the surface-level answer.
But when you understand how the digestive system actually functions, what different organs are involved, and how herbs interact with those systems in different ways, everything changes.
Now you’re asking better questions.
What kind of digestive issues
Where exactly
What does peppermint actually do in the body
What are its specific actions and constituents
How should it be prepared
Is it even the right herb for this person
That’s the difference between collecting information and learning to think like an herbalist.
Meeting People Where They’re At
Here’s something else that doesn’t get talked about enough.
Herbalism isn’t one-size-fits-all, and it’s not just about the herbs.
Every body is different. Every person is living within real constraints. Some folks can afford all organic food, supplements, and specialty products. Many people can’t, especially right now.
Real herbalism means meeting people where they actually are.
Sometimes the root of digestive issues is stress from a job someone can’t afford to quit. Telling them to “just quit” would create a whole new set of problems. So instead, we look for realistic ways to support their nervous system, digestion, and overall resilience within the life they’re actually living.
That might mean small, sustainable lifestyle shifts paired with herbs that truly fit their constitution. Maybe peppermint isn’t the right choice at all. Maybe it’s too warming. Maybe they need something to tone the digestive system or address inflammation at the root.
This is where you start seeing the body as a whole being. Body, mind, and spirit. And the herbs as whole beings too, with multiple actions and layers of support.
The Difference Mentorship Makes
Trying to figure all of this out alone can feel heavy.
Scrolling through contradictory advice. Second-guessing your choices. Hoping you’re doing right by the people who trust you.
This is exactly why mentorship and structured guidance matter so much.
Having mentors who have walked this path, who can help you think more critically, who can challenge you to go deeper than the surface-level noise, changes everything. You’re no longer guessing alone.
You learn how to assess what’s really going on. How to formulate with intention. How to support people thoughtfully, whether that’s one person, your family, or your wider community.
This is what we’ve built inside the Community Herbalist Certification & Mentorship. Two clinical herbalists with over 50 years of combined experience, alongside a community of people learning and growing together.
It’s not for quick fixes or “what herb fixes this” answers. It’s for people who feel the responsibility of being the herbalist in their community and want to meet that responsibility with skill, depth, compassion, and care.
The Ever-Growing Journey
The deeper you go into herbalism, the more you’ll realize how much there is to learn. That never really ends.
But that doesn’t mean you’re not ready. It means you care. It means you’re listening.
If any of this resonates and you’re feeling the pull to go deeper, to have structure, guidance, and someone to challenge your thinking in a supportive way, that invitation might be for you 🌿
The plants will call you at the perfect time.
And if that time is now, I’d love to walk alongside you.
