Beyond Elderberry! Legend and Lore of the Elder Shrubbery

Elegant Elder, It’s everywhere you want to be!

Elderberry syrup is all the rage these days, and with cold and flu season, plus a global pandemic, with cases back on the rise, it’s no wonder why! This stuff is a powerhouse when it comes to boosting your immune system, and fighting off viruses.

But, elderberries come from a beautiful shrub, and there’s a lot more to this shrub than just berries.

I thought that today, we could touch on some of the history and lore of this amazing and beloved shrubbery. Much of this information I gathered from Mathew Wood’s "The Book of Herbal Wisdom" and "The Earthwise Herbal". And from Alma Hutchins book, "Indian Herbology of North America".

This shrubbery was also referred to as the Hylde Mother, or Elder Mother. The Elder Mother was the Queen of The Underworld, or Fairy Land. It was known as the doorway to the underworld, or the Magical Fairy Realm. Don’t tell my daughter, or...

Immune Stimulant Herbs, Antivirals, Antibacterials: What The Heck Are They & When Do I Need Them

As we are in the midst of cold and flu season, I figured we'd do a quick little overview of what antiviral and antimicrobial herbs are, what they can do for you and your body and how it's really nice to be able to use plants as medicine instead of relying consistently on harsh pharmaceuticals and such that can later be put into our water streams, our soils and all of those things. I truly believe that using plants as medicine is one of those great ways that we can make our earth a better place.

So, what is an Immune Stimulant?

Immune stimulants help your body resist infection during the beginning stages of an illness, or potential infection, and they’re also helpful throughout the duration of an illness. They help to stimulate white blood cell activity, and are typically taken for a short time to address acute illness and infection. They’re also helpful during times that you know people around you are getting sick, or if you’re about to travel, back to school time,...

Herbs to Boost Your Immune System, Some of My Favs!

It's Back-to-School season, which means it's Fall and it's going to start getting nice and cool and crisp and beautiful, and cold & flu season is about to be straight, crazy this year. Add that to a pandemic and we are in for a rowdy ride. So I wanted to share with you some of my absolute favorite and number one, two, three, and four go-to herbs that I run to when it's time for me to get my immune system in check and ready to rock it through cold and flu season.

So here we are. The first day of fall, September 22nd, the air is absolutely gorgeous outside. The leaves are changing color. When I go for my walks with my doggies it's that awesome, warm fallen leaves scent that I just cannot get enough of. Kids are back to school, some of them are actually in the school buildings, some of them doing online work, some just homeschooling kind of everywhere, but one thing that always happens with this time of year is Back-to-School happens and cold and flu season kicks in as well as...

Make Your Own Elderberry Syrup: Boost Your Immunity to Ward Off Cold & Flu

Elderberry Syrup is all the rage these days, and with great reason! It’s an incredible immune booster, and with a pandemic happening, there’s no better time to keep your immune system in check. We’ve been keeping up on our elderberry syrup intake so we can stay well during COVID 19 and all year long.

So what makes elderberries so special to be used as the “big guns” in the home of an herbalist? One of the obvious reasons I already stated is that it’s a great immune booster, but my favorite reason of all though is that it’s yummy medicine!

For those of you with kiddos around, (or if you have taste buds), you know how hard it can be to get your little ones (or yourself) to take their medicine.  Mary Poppins was really onto something when she said “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down”; only I like to replace the refined sugar with a healthier alternative like honey. Not only does the honey replace the...

How To Make Elderberry Popsicles

My daughter loves these popsicles so much, she wants to run around and share them with all of the neighborhood kids and set up a popsicle stand outside.  This kid is on to something, maybe she’ll be a businesswoman like her mama?

No clue what Elderberries are, and why people would make popsicles of them? It's ok! You can learn more about Elderberry's immune-boosting properties over here.
