Surviving the Sugar Season- Herbal Remedies To Boost Immunity
Here we are, fresh after Halloween and an incredible sugar overload for everyone. And, big shocker, there's already tons of people posting on social media about how they're sick, or their kids are sick, or well, you catch my drift. So, in this episode I wanted to talk a bit about how to choose herbs to support your immune system, and really your whole crew too!
Sugar; The Enemy Of Immunity
It's big secret that sugar can wreak havoc on the immune system, and makes a dramatic difference in whether the body will be able to resist infection or any potential pathogens that may be invading the body. And, now that Halloween is over, we're certainly not in the clear. I mean, now it's feasting season, pies, desserts, all the things that can make the never ending cycle of sickness a sad reality in your home.
Thankfully We Have Herbs To Turn To
But, there's a bit more to it than just grabbing the first herb you heard was good for immune health. In fact, there's so many herbs that are good for immune health, what's really important is knowing which herbs to turn to and when, for your immune health. So, let's dive a bit deeper (and deeper still if you listen to the podcast)
Immunomodulating herbs are the ones that are there, to stick with you throughout the year, through thick and thin. You can think of them as having a healthy diet and exercise regimen, but for your immunity. They basically strengthen, tone, and support your immunity all year.
They're best taken for longer durations, though some may need a few months on, and a few months off. Some of my favorite immunomodulators for kids are Ashwagandha, Tulsi, and Shiitake Mushrooms. Yes ,the mushrooms you can get in the grocery store! They're powerhouses, so keep adding them to your meals!
These are the herbal friends who get all the love and affection this time of year. You know, the 'immune boosters' everybody wants them! And, with tons of good right, but often I see people that are taking them all year round. When, in fact that's not necessary at all.
These herbal allies are best taken right at the first sign of illness. Or, when everyone you know is getting sick, it's high time to get those immune boosters on board. Some of my absolutely favs for kids, are the beautiful echinacea, elderberries for their antiviral properties, and the super powerful, amazing, delicious garlic! Heck, let's toss some ginger in there too. Cause why not make your food your medicine!
